You Are Not Your Thoughts

You Are Not Your Thoughts

Your mind is like a river—constantly flowing with thoughts. Some are helpful, others distracting, and some overwhelming.

"I’m not good enough."
"I’ll never get it right."
"Why can’t I just stop overthinking?"

It’s easy to get caught up in these thoughts, to believe them as absolute truth. But here’s something important:

You are not your thoughts. You are the observer.

Let Them Float By

This exercise, based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), helps create distance between you and your thoughts. Instead of getting stuck in them, you learn to simply notice and let them go.

Try this simple mindfulness practice:

  1. Imagine sitting by a calm river.

  2. Each thought that comes up? Place it on a leaf.

  3. Watch the leaf drift downstream. No need to hold on or push it away.

  4. Repeat with each new thought. Big or small, positive or negative—every thought gets a leaf.

Why It Works

  • Creates distance between you and your thoughts.

  • Stops you from getting stuck in overthinking.

  • Helps you respond, instead of just reacting.

Your thoughts do not define you. They are simply passing by. Let them float.
